Contents |
The primary focus of Geophysical Journal International is fundamental research in Geophysics. Hence, coverage includes all topics in computational, theoretical, observational and applied geophysics. The published results are disseminated knowledge of the Earth's internal structure, its physical properties, its processes and its evolution. Topical coverage includes earthquake seismology as related to the physics of earthquakes, earth's gravitational field, terrestrial geodesy, satellite geodesy, earth's physical shape (including deformation and mass transfer), geomagnetism , palaeomagnetism, rock magnetism, plate tectonics, mineral physics (rheology, heat flow, volcanology), earth as a whole system, marine geosciences, electromagnetism, and subfields of applied geophysics.[3]
In 2004 this journal was reorganized into a series of broad and flexible sectional areas delineated as follows:
In 1988, the journal communicated its intention to eventually expand its coverage into planetary science. By 2004 activity in planetary science increased in Europe. Also by this time the European Space Agency was planning future expansion in this area. Hence, the journal decided also to expand its scope into planetary science.[5]
This journal was formerly entitled Geophysical Journal (Oxford) from January 1988 to June 1989. Geophysical Journal was itself formed by the merger of three other publications: Geophysical Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society, Journal of Geophysics, and Annales Geophysicae, Series B: Terrestrial and Planetary Physics[4]
Geophysical Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society was in existence from March 1958 to December 1987, and was preceded by Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, Geophysical Supplement. The Journal of Geophysics was in existence from 1974 to 1987, and preceded by the German-language journal, Zeitschrift fuer Geophysik (1924–1973).[4]
Finally, Annales Geophysicae, Series B: Terrestrial and Planetary Physics was in existence from 1986 to 1987, and preceded by Annales Geophysicae( Gauthier-Villars) (1983–1985). Annales Geophysicae (Gauthier-Villars) was formed by the merger of two other journals: Annales de Geophysique (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) (1942–1982), and Annali di Geofisica (1948–1982).[4]
